It’s been over two months that the country is facing an indefinite lockdown due to Coronavirus. The entertainment industry has taken a massive hit because of the same. For the first time, the shoots and releases have been put on hold and the Multiplex Association of India along with the single screen owners are now getting restless. With some of the major releases being put on hold this year, they have suggested new safety measures and guidelines and are hoping that the theatres will reopen somewhere in between June 15 to June 30.
According to the new safety measures manual, the theatres might allow 50 percent occupancy. The food and beverages will be ordered through an app to avoid human contact along with online bookings of the tickets being encouraged. The staff will be geared with gloves and masks and the screens will be thoroughly cleaned. The Association is waiting for the government’s nod to the new guidelines.
Even though big-budget films like Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi and Salman Khan’s Radhe are going to be among the first ones to release, the association feels that these films will pull the crowd back to the theatres.

Salman is currently at his Panvel farmhouse but in this hour of need, he made sure help and support reaches to the Mumbai Police who are diligently taking utmost care for the people of the city. Despite a complete shutdown of work in the Hindi film industry, due to the presence of trade unions and the Producers' Guild, daily wage workers have been taken care of. Besides huge donations pouring in from celebrities in the film industry, the Guild mobilized for direct donations to be made in kind for the daily wagers. But what happens to theatre artists? With not a single play held in close to three months, actors and technicians who primarily work in plays are struggling to stay afloat. In an attempt to help them by initiating a dialogue about their situation, Ali Fazal is backing an initiative that intends to build a database of theatre artists and technicians who are working in the Mumbai theatre industry. Currently struggling to make ends meet, more so, due to the absence of a union or a working body, the database will record details of actors and technicians working in the circuit and could require the necessary support.
Ever since his college days, Ali has always had a soft spot for performance arts. Upon finding out about the situation of theatre actors from his peers, Ali decided to help them out in whatever way he can. Ali is backing an independent initiative called theatre wale, which has put together a video raising awareness towards the plight of theatre actors in times of the current pandemic. The music for the video has been scored by Nishant Raja. It's written by Amitosh Nagpal, who has also conceptualized the video with Maneesh Verma.
Speaking about it, Ali says, "It was important to talk about the situation of theatre actors at a time when the lockdown has gone on for almost 8 weeks. Amitosh Nagpal is the center point on all of this. I merely cane in from the stands. And thanks to him this reached me and hopefully many others. Most actors in the industry owe craft and learning to the theatre. And yet, there's a step child-like treatment meted out to them. It's important for us to stand up for our fraternity and stand by each other in these difficult times. Some known personalities are creating a database to help the technicians and crew members who have been rendered jobless due to the lockdown. The actors are still able to take the leap and be part of virtual performance shows. We need to make a start somewhere to help the theatre community and Theatrewale's video is a great starting point for us. I hope more actors and filmmakers join in the initiative."
Amitosh Nagpal added, "Artists love the world, and they love helping, kisi se bhi doosre ko help karne poocho toh response is ‘I’m in, I’m in, what can I do. Tell me ?’” is waqt jab unke kaam ke samne bhi andhera hai tab bhi vo sabke liye agey aa rahe hain. Lekin aise mein yeh bhi zaroori hai ki unki problems mein baaki log bhi saath khade dikhai dein."
The two major celebrity weddings of 2020, Ranbir Kapoor - Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan - Natasha Dalal, have now been shifted to 2021 in the light of the current crisis.
Sources in the know confirm both the developments. Apparently, the Dhawan family has taken a conscious decision to move ahead instead of letting the wedding hover in the uncertainty of 2020.
“The entire Dhawan and Dalaal families have taken this decision collectively. The Varun - Natasha wedding will now be planned afresh in 2021,” says the source.
As for Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt with Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor's tragic demise, there is no question of a wedding in the family this year.
Apparently, both Ranbir and Alia are keen to make their relationship official. But, it now seems the wedding won’t happen until the second-half of 2021.
With the coronavirus showing no signs of abating anytime in the near future, it seems no star weddings are likely to occur in 2020.

While the actor to play the crazily talented singer Baiju in the love story Baiju Bawra is yet to be decided, Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is remaking the musical classic Baiju Bawra has zeroed in on his second-favourite actress (Aishawarya Rai Bachchan being the first) to play Baiju’s love interest Gauri.
The role was originally played by Meena Kumari in 1952’s Baiju Bawra directed by Vijay Bhatt. Sources say Bhansali feels Deepika comes closest to conveying the dignity and tragic grandeur of Meena Kumari.
“Of course, the role of Gauri would be very different now. But the essence of the character remains unchanged,” informs the source.
Also, it seems the heroine’s role in Bhansali’s Baiju Bawra would be significantly increased. Meena Kumari, in the original, didn’t have that much to do. The entire focus was on Bharat Bhushan as the commoner who usurps the legendary singer Tansen from Emperor Akbar’s durbar. Not so in Bhansali’s re-make.

Ajay Devgn was next to be seen in Maidaan and the shoot had already begun a while before the pandemic hit the world. A 16-acre wide set was built for the same, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, it wasn’t used as expected. So, now, the makers have decided to dismantle it since the monsoon season is on its way. Producer Boney Kapoor has confirmed the news regarding the same.
He says the set was built around a 16-acre plot in Mumbai and it is being taken down since we can expect rain on any day now. The rebuilding of this set will take close to two months, so if they begin it in September this year, the shoot can commence only in November. Luckily for the team, some indoor and outdoor portions have already been shot in Lucknow and Kolkata, so they won’t have to start from scratch.
Maidaan is being directed by Amit Sharma and it revolves around the late Abdul Sayed Rahim’s life who was considered as one of the finest football coaches. He also managed the Indian national football team from 1950 until his death in 1963.
