On the evening of Saturday January 30, the Union government put out a directive that cinema halls can run with 100% occupancy. And as expected, it led to a wave of cheer among exhibitors, trade and industry at large. Post-lockdown, cinema halls were allowed to open from October 15. However, they were told to operate at 50% occupancy. Hence, alternate seats were asked to be left vacant. The exhibition sector was constantly persuading the government that running theatres at half the occupancy was not feasible. Bollywood filmmakers, too, shied away from releasing their mid-sized and big-ticket films in such a scenario as they feared losses. But with the 100% occupancy being allowed, trade is already abuzz that very soon, a slew of announcements of release dates of biggies are going to take place.
Meanwhile, Jio Studios, which was supposed to release Aadhaar on Friday February 5, have decided to postpone its release. Starring Vineet Kumar Singh, Sanjay Mishra and Saurabh Shukla, this Suman Ghosh-directed film is about the adventures of the first person in Jharkhand who gets an Aadhaar card made for him. It is backed by Manish Mundra’s Drishyam Films.
The spokesperson of Jio Studios confirmed that now the government has given the nod for full occupancy, they would want to bring their bigger films first. Hence, they have decided to push Aadhar to a later date. As per a report in a daily, Jio Studios has decided to release their bigger films like Roohi Afzana, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor and Mimi, starring Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi, first. Both these films are also co-produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films.
On the other hand, the trade is hopeful that in a few days, the release date of the much-awaited Sooryavanshi would be unveiled. Starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, Sooryavanshi is directed by Rohit Shetty and is a part of his cop universe. There’s buzz in the trade that it’s scheduled to release on April 2. A decision will be taken once the makers reach a consensus with the multiplexes over issues like revenue sharing, OTT release, VPF etc.

Is Kabir Khan’s 83, the sports drama about India’s victory at the 1983 World Cup series, about to get an international spin? It is reliably learnt that the film is being readied in the English language as well as the original Hindi.
Reveals the source, “It makes sense to have an English version of 83 since Kapil Dev has fans all over the world. The story of his triumph at the 1983 World Cup is of interest to his fans across the world. So yes, an international English version of 83 is being considered.”
83 stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev while Ranveer real-life wife Deepika Padukone plays Kapil Dev’s better-half Romi Dev.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is certainly not done with his aborted dream-project Inshallah, the love story that was to feature Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt. Making a flash-decision, he closed down Inshallah and quickly moved on to Gangubai Kathiawadi with Alia Bhatt in the title role.
But Inshallah remains in the back of Bhansali’s mind. “It is a beautiful simple timeless love story. Sanjay still wants to make it with Alia and a different leading man,” reveals a source close to the epic director.
The hero required for the part must be in the 50-plus category and a big star. Shah Rukh Khan is the obvious choice.
“But Shah Rukh Khan has already done a film – Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi — with Alia. So the novelty of seeing the two generation-challenged superstars exchanging emotions is gone. But who knows! It may be SRK only. The important thing is to make Inshallah exactly the way SLB had envisaged it. And he will.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is stepping into the web zone now. And just like we expected, he is all set to turn heads and grab eyeballs with a magnum opus being planned for the digital platform. The mega budget series is actually a script that was initially planned as a feature film, starring Priyanka Chopra in the lead. Now, Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi have been roped in to play two leads, whereas talks are on with Vidya Balan as well.
But the heroine centric film, that revolves around the life of courtesans and prostitutes during the Indo-Pak partition, also has many prominent male lead roles. SLB has already started discussion with a few actors. The source adds, "Kartik Aaryan and Bhansali have always discussed in teaming up for a film together. They have met a couple of times in the past as well but nothing worked out. Recently, he was spotted at the maverick filmmaker's office and apparently, SLB asked him if he would like to do a role in Heera Mandi."
Kartik was also offered a role in Gangubai Kathiawadi which he declined. Now it needs to be seen if he signs this one. But even if he does, it's majorly a woman dominated script but Kartik has a very edgy role to essay. But if Kartik agrees, this might be his second project on the digital platform after Ram Madhvani's Dhamaka which might have a direct to OTT release.

Sundance Film Festival 2021 has already seen a record-breaking acquisition. Apple has acquired CODA for a whopping $25 million at this year's festival.
According to Entertainment Weekly, "Apple has shelled out a reported $25 million to acquire the festival's opening-day sensation CODA, marking the most expensive acquisition in Sundance history."
Siân Heder spoke to Deadline about the bidding for his movie and the demand it had. He said, “I have been so moved by the outpouring of response to the film and am so excited to have found a partner in Apple that loves and deeply gets this movie, the spirit in which it was created and is committed to having this film reach the widest audience possible in a thoughtful and meaningful way. The whole CODA team is also so grateful to Sundance for being a part of the film’s journey."
He added, "I hope that this film and Apple’s powerful support will help kick down some doors standing in the way of inclusion and representation and pave a path for more stories that center characters from the Deaf and Disabled community. The world has waited too long for these stories to be told. Now is the time. No more excuses.”
CODA stars Emilia Jones and Oscar winner Marlee Matlin. According to Deadline, "Writer-director Siân Heder’s coming-of-age drama is about a high school senior who is the only hearing person in her deaf family and is torn between holding together that unit or seeking her own dreams."
The previous record was held by Andy Samberg's film Palm Springs as Neon and Hulu paid $22 million to acquire the film.
After the super hit film Gully Boy, actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt are all set to pair up once again. The duo have reportedly got on board for a love story by Dharma Productions. The film will be directed by Karan Johar himself.
Karan Johar last directed the romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. While he has directed segments in Netflix original Lust Stories and Ghost Stories, this will be his next big screen directorial.
What makes it even more exciting is that this is the first time that Ranveer Singh will be directed by Karan Johar. For Alia, it will be a reunion, as Karan had directed her debut film Student of The Year which was released in 2012. Details regarding the film are currently under wrap.
Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh were all set to share screen in Karan Johar's directorial Takht which was announced a while ago. However, the film seems to have been put on hold. Takht is a multi-starrer with Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Janhvi Kapoor headlining the cast.

Ever since some alarming reports appeared about Sharmila Tagore not keeping good health, the legendary diva has been inundated with calls from anxious friends, relatives, and fans.
Putting to rest all concerns about her health, Sharmila Tagore ji says, “By God’s grace I am in fine health. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned. Though I’m 76, I keep myself very busy reading, gardening, social engagements, and of course attending to my obligations at home. There is no time to brood .”
The past year’s lockdown also gave the highly versatile critically acclaimed actress an opportunity to watch all her films chronologically. “Many of my own films, I had never seen before. And I must say some of my old films like Choti Bahu and Badnaam Farishtay have withstood the test of time. I like Asit Sen’s Safar and Bhimsain’s Dooriyaan because I played a proper professional. This was so different from the conventional roles for heroines during those days. I like Anupama, Safar, Amar Prem, Talaash and Aradhana. Apur Sansar was a milestone and so was Devi. I got to work with Satyajit Ray in both.”
Sharmilaji’s own personal favourite performance remains the one she gave in the great Satyajit Ray’s Devi when she was just 14. “It is my own favourite film and performance. My life changed when I was introduced to Satyajit Ray. It was acting for me thereafter. But I kept telling myself I’d quit after every film. I saw myself in my first Hindi film Kashmir Ki Kali and I didn’t like myself. I said, one more film and I’m done. But it continued. But I left so many films: Khilona, Tere Mere Sapne, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Aadmi Aur Insaan.... You have to appreciate the fact that acting is not the be-all end-all of my life. There is so much more to life. In any case, unlike Jaya (Bachchan) or Shabana (Azmi), who went to acting school, I was an accidental actress. I remember seeing Jaya at age 13 with her father, the distinguished journalist Tarun Kumar Bhaduri. Even at that age she was decked up, a rose in her hair and so on. She was very enamoured of the camera. She was destined to be an actress. I had no such aspirations. I actually wanted to go to Shanti Niketan. I wanted to be a dancer.”

The Indian men's cricket team recently had a historic win in Australia beating the home team to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. What looked like an impossible feat at the beginning of the tour was made possible even with multiple injuries and key players missing. Team India under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane ended Australia's 32-year-long unbeaten streak at the Gabba.
Now, it has been learnt that actress Saiyami Kher who is a cricket enthusiast herself, plans to write a book dedicated to the series. Talking to a daily, Saiyami said that as a cricket fan, it is the best comeback story that she has witnessed.
Further talking about what appealed to her the most, she said that this win is the quintessential triumph of the underdog story. She said that no one believed that this team could pull it off and they did, despite the odds. For Saiyami, sports means a lot and she owes her never give up spirit to it. She said that after her debut film Mirzya did not work, she went and ran a marathon.
The Choked actress is excited and emotional with the thought of capturing the historic cricket moment in a book. She said that it would not be statistical but a humane story. Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur, R Ashwin, Washingtom Sundar are some of the names who will be sharing their anecdotes for the book.

Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan have always maintained that they wanted to work together. But till date, they haven't been seen sharing screen space ever. But in 2021, it will all change and now, we hear that they have signed not one but two big projects together. Hrithik and Deepika have already announced their next - Siddharth Anand's Fighter which will showcase their jodi for the first time. Last week, there were reports that they are also starring in Madhu Mantena's version of Ramayana, that too in 3D.
Ever since the news went viral on the Internet, Kangana fans have targeted Hrithik and claimed he shouldn't play Ram on screen. Little do they know that Hrithik has a different role in the mytho-drama. A source shares, "Duggu had been in talks to play an important role in Deepika's Draupadi which was a modern retelling of the epic Mahabharat. But that film will happen later. Mantena is bankrolling Ramayana first and Hrithik will play Ravan's role in the epic period drama."
Incidentally, T-Series is also producing Adipurush which has Prabhas playing Ram, Kriti Sanon essaying Sita's role and Saif Ali Khan stepping in as Ravan. Now, it will be Hrithik vs Saif at the plexes as they play the same role in different projects. And what's more interesting? Hrithik and Saif will also be seen together in Vikram Vedha remake.
With the folks of the real Mirzapur up in arms against being portrayed as gun-toting criminals in the fictional Mirzapur, the series is likely to go back to the storyboard for some serious revamping before Season 3 begins shooting.
Among the changes that are likely to take place there may be a serious toning down of the verbal and visual violence which is to say, the characters won’t use gaalis as if they (the gaalis) were the only way to express rage (rage being the dominant emotion in the series, since everybody is angry all the time). In addition, the shoot-outs may not be that frequent.
But the better option is to rename the series and then reserve the rights to perpetrate the trademark mayhem.
Says one of the prominent actors from the series, “We haven’t really discussed the changes. But changes, there will be. When the first season came we didn’t have people from Mirzapur objecting to the series. But now, with protests there will be changes for sure. Dropping the title may be a last-ditch option to save the series.”
But if the series is not called Mirzapur, would it still have the same impact on viewers?
All these questions would now have to be explored in the light of the protests. One thing is for sure. You can’t have a series with the name of an actual town or city on the map and show it as a den of crime. There is hell to pay.

The Allahabad High Court on Friday stayed the arrest of producers of the Amazon Prime Video web series Mirzapur. Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment were named in a FIR accusing them of improper and indecent portrayal of the town of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and also for outraging religious beliefs.
Division bench of justices Manoj Kumar Gupta and Subhash Chand while granting relief to the producers directed them to offer full cooperation in the investigation. The bench was hearing a writ petition filed by Akhtar And Sidhwani. The court also issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government and complainant seeking their replies.
“Having regard to the facts of the case and the submissions made, till the next date of listing or till submission of police report under Section 173(2) CrPC, whichever is earlier, no coercive action shall be taken against the petitioners in pursuance of the FIR registered. However, the petitioners shall offer full cooperation in the investigation,” the court said.
A case was filed against the producers at Kotwali Dehat Police Station in Mirzapur district under sections 295-A, 504, 505 and 34 of IPC and 67-A of IT Act.
Mirzapur is a two part series currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The series narrates the story of a dark world of guns, drugs and lawlessness.

Sanya Malhotra had a rocking debut with Dangal (2016), which was also the biggest hit of that year. She even got noticed with Badhaai Ho (2018), another huge grosser. However, it’s in 2020 when she really made her presence felt and added to her fan following. She rocked the show with Shakuntala Devi and even her unrecognizable look got praise. In Ludo, she arguably was a part of the best story of the film and her chemistry with Aditya Roy Kapur was electrifying. Interestingly, both these films were released digitally. While Shakuntala Devi premiered on Amazon Prime, Ludo was streamed on Netflix.
And now, it has come to light that her next film, Pagglait, too has opted for a digital release. A source reveals, “Pagglait was completed somewhere in February 2020, just before the lockdown. It’s a slice-of-life comedy and the makers feel it’s apt for an OTT platform. Hence, they decided to release it on Netflix”. The source also adds that the streaming giant plans to release Pagglait in the next two months. It is produced by Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures.
Besides Sanya Malhotra, Pagglait also stars Sayani Gupta, Sharib Hashmi, Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chaddha. It’s directed by Umesh Bist, whose last film was O Teri (2014). He was also credited as the dialogue and screenplay writer of Hero (2015), the launch vehicle of Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty.
Sanya Malhotra has excitedly spoken about Pagglait and has called it a special film. It’s also the first time that she’ll be playing a solo lead in a film. Interestingly, her next film, Meenakshi Sundareshwar, co-starring Abhimanyu Dassani and produced by Karan Johar, will also be a Netflix release. Apart from these two films, she would also be seen in Love Hostel, co-starring Vikrant Massey and Bobby Deol. It is produced by Manish Mundra’s Drishyam Films and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
If Kartik Aaryan has extra time on hand it is because Anees Bazmi’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has been put on hold indefinitely. No, that’s not the director Anees playing it safe on behalf of his entire team. It’s one of the film’s leading ladies Tabu who has refused to shoot until the pandemic is over.
A source very close to the project told me, “A major schedule of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in Jaipur was shut down in March 2020, and the unit had to disperse hastily amidst the pandemic scare. After the lockdown ended, director Anees Bazmi informed the cast and crew that the shooting would resume. But Tabu, who plays a major part in the film, refused to return, arguing that she was not feeling secure or safe shooting while the pandemic prevailed. The producers were left with no choice but to postpone shooting indefinitely.”
It’s good to see that Tabu’s wishes are respected. And that she has not been replaced by another actress. Just goes to prove, Tabu is irreplaceable.

The pandemic caused a major delay in several projects in the film industry. Shoots of all films and web series were brought to a halt for months during the pandmeic. While shoots have now resumed it has caused havoc in the scheduling of actors and has led to some change in casting.
Actor Angira Dhar who was to play the role of Haseena Parkar in the web series Dongri To Dubai has bowed out of the project. The web series directed by Shujat Saudagar has Avinash Tiwary play the role of Dawood Ibrahim. The shoot of the series was resumed recently at Madh Island in Mumbai. Reportedly, Angira has to now shoot for Ajay Devgn's MayDay. The makers of Dongri to Dubai also required the actress on the same dates and so Angira decided to walk out of the project.
Kritik Kamra will now play the role of Dawood's sister Haseena in the web series. Kamra was last seen in the recently released web series Tandav. Dongri To Dubai is based on a book by Hussain Zaidi.
